GUIDE CABLE TRAYS TECHNICAL

The base metal thickness of a cable tray must be sufficient to support the weight and number of cables without deformation or failure. For standard steel or aluminum trays, thicknesses generally range from 1.5 mm to 3 mm, depending on tray width, span between supports, and load type (light, medium, or heavy duty) to ensure structural integrity under full load conditions . Proper installation requires trays to be level, plumb, and securely mounted, with minimal horizontal (≤2 mm/m) and vertical (≤3 mm/m) deviation .
Fireproof cable trays are often coated with fire-resistant materials to achieve a required fire rating. The coating thickness must comply with national safety standards and project specifications. Application methods include spraying, rolling, or brushing, and the coating should be uniform, smooth, and free of cracks, bubbles, or peeling . Thickness is typically measured with calibrated devices, and adhesion tests (cross-cut or pull-off) are performed to ensure the coating bonds securely to the tray .
At slab or wall penetrations, additional fireproofing measures are required. Firestop packs or fire-resistant mineral wool should be installed with a minimum packing thickness of 24 mm, and gaps around trays should not exceed 1 cm² . Waterstops of at least 50 mm height and fire-support plates of 20–30 mm are recommended to maintain fire integrity at floor or slab penetrations . All gaps must be sealed tightly, and cover plates should be square and evenly painted .
Regular inspection is essential to maintain fire resistance. Check for coating degradation, corrosion, or mechanical damage, and reapply protective coatings as needed . Document inspection results, including thickness measurements and adhesion tests, to ensure compliance with safety standards .
