Measuring optical power with a multimeter

Standard multimeters cannot directly measure optical power; an optical power meter or optical multimeter is required for accurate fiber optic measurements.

Why a Standard Multimeter Cannot Measure Optical Power

A typical electrical multimeter measures voltage, current, and resistance, but it cannot detect light intensity or convert optical signals into electrical readings. Optical power is the energy carried by light in a fiber, usually in the range of nanowatts to milliwatts, and requires a photodiode sensor to convert light into a measurable electrical signal .

Using an Optical Power Meter

An optical power meter (OPM) is designed to measure the power of light in fiber optic systems. It consists of a calibrated photodiode sensor, an amplifier, and a display. The photodiode generates a small current proportional to the incoming light, which is amplified and converted into a digital reading, typically displayed in dBm (decibels relative to 1 milliwatt) or mW . Key steps include:

  1. Clean the fiber connectors to prevent dust from affecting readings .
  2. Set the correct wavelength on the meter to match the signal being tested, as photodiode sensitivity is wavelength-dependent .
  3. Calibrate the meter regularly to maintain accuracy .
  4. Connect the fiber to the meter probe and read the optical power on the display.

Using an Optical Multimeter

An optical multimeter (OMM) integrates multiple functions, including an optical power meter, light source, and sometimes an OTDR. It can measure:

  • Optical power in dBm or mW
  • Attenuation and loss across fibers, connectors, and splices
  • Wavelength identification and continuity testing
  • Fault location using a visual fault locator (VFL) in some models OMMs are particularly useful for complex networks, allowing technicians to evaluate signal quality and detect issues efficiently.

Units of Measurement

  • dBm: Absolute optical power relative to 1 mW. For example, 0 dBm = 1 mW, -10 dBm = 0.1 mW, +10 dBm = 10 mW .
  • dB: Relative measurement of loss or gain between two points in the fiber.
