Removal of cable tray clips

Cable tray clips can be safely removed using the right tools and techniques, tailored to the clip type, to avoid damage and allow reuse.

Identify the Clip Type

Before starting, determine the type of clip you are dealing with:

  • Adhesive clips (including 3M/Command strips)
  • Screw-in clips
  • Nail or coaxial clips
  • Specialty clips (P-style, saddle, or flat clips) Different types require slightly different removal methods to prevent damage to surfaces or cables .

Tools You May Need

  • Flathead screwdriver or putty knife
  • Needle-nose pliers or mole grips
  • Claw hammer or pry bar
  • Side cutters (for cutting nails if necessary)
  • Heat gun or hairdryer (for adhesive clips)
  • Rubbing alcohol and cloth (for cleaning residue)

Removal Techniques

1. Adhesive Clips (including 3M/Command strips)

  • Heat the adhesive gently with a hairdryer or heat gun to soften it .
  • Use a flathead screwdriver or putty knife to carefully pry the clip from the surface .
  • For 3M/Command clips, stretch the adhesive strip slowly and parallel to the wall to release it cleanly without residue .
  • Clean any leftover adhesive with rubbing alcohol . 2. Screw-in Clips
  • Use a screwdriver to unscrew the clip from the surface .
  • Pry gently if the clip is stuck, taking care not to damage the wall or cable . 3. Nail or Coaxial Clips
  • Disconnect the cable from the clip first .
  • Insert the claw of a hammer or a pry bar under the clip and apply gentle pressure to lift it .
  • For delicate surfaces like mortar or soft wood, place a thin piece of wood or metal under the clip to protect the surface .
  • Mole grips or locking pliers can help remove stubborn clips without excessive force .
  • As a last resort, side cutters can be used to cut the nail if removal is too difficult . 4. Large or Stubborn Clips
  • Needle-nose pliers or pincers can provide extra grip for larger clips .
  • Apply heat for adhesive clips or gently wiggle screw/nail clips to loosen them .

Tips for Safe Removal

  • Always pull straight out when possible to minimize surface damage .
  • Work slowly and carefully to avoid breaking the clip or damaging the cable .
  • After removal, clean the area to remove adhesive residue or debris .
  • Consider repurposing reusable clips for cable management, desk organization, or craft projects . By following these steps and using the appropriate tools, you can efficiently remove cable tray clips while preserving both the surface and the clips for potential reuse.
