Multimode fiber film order

To order multimode fiber, first select the appropriate OM type (OM1–OM5) based on your network speed, distance, and application, then contact a manufacturer or distributor such as Corning or SEL.

Choosing the Right Multimode Fiber

Multimode fiber (MMF) is ideal for short- to medium-distance data transmission within buildings, campuses, or data centers, supporting high data rates up to 100 Gbps depending on fiber type . The five main types are:

  • OM1: 62.5 µm core, legacy fiber, suitable for older 1G networks, limited 10G support, orange jacket .
  • OM2: 50 µm core, supports 1G and limited 10G, compatible with modern 50 µm systems .
  • OM3: 50 µm laser-optimized, supports 10G/25G and moderate-distance 40G/100G links, cost-effective for enterprise networks .
  • OM4: Enhanced laser-optimized 50 µm, higher bandwidth than OM3, supports longer distances at high speeds, mainstream for new deployments .
  • OM5: Wideband multimode fiber, optimized for shortwave wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM), future-proof for high-speed data centers . MMF uses LED or VCSEL light sources, which are lower-cost than single-mode lasers, making it economical for short-range connections .

Ordering Multimode Fiber

To place an order:

  1. Determine your network requirements: speed, distance, and connector type.
  2. Select the fiber type: OM3 or OM4 is recommended for most modern data centers; OM1/OM2 only for legacy systems .
  3. Contact a manufacturer or distributor:
    • Corning ClearCurve Multimode Fiber: Call 1-607-248-2000 (U.S./Canada) or +44-1244-525-320 (Europe), or email [email protected] .
    • SEL Multimode Fiber Accessories: Available for serial port conversion and network integration; contact via selinc.com .
  4. Specify quantity, length, and any custom requirements: such as bend-resilient or laser-optimized fiber.
  5. Confirm delivery and technical support: ensure compatibility with existing transceivers and network equipment.

Additional Considerations

  • Connector types: LC, SC, or MTP/MPO depending on your transceivers.
  • Distance limitations: OM3 supports up to 300 m at 10G, OM4 up to 400 m, OM5 slightly longer with SWDM .
  • Future-proofing: OM4 or OM5 is recommended for new installations to support higher speeds and longer distances. By following these steps, you can ensure you order the correct multimode fiber for your network needs while maintaining cost-effectiveness and reliability.
