Principle of Operation

An optical power meter (OPM) measures the power of light, typically in fiber optic systems, by converting incident light into an electrical signal using a photodiode, thermopile, or pyroelectric detector . The detector generates a current or voltage proportional to the optical power. The meter then amplifies and processes this signal to display the power in watts or decibel-milliwatts (dBm) . Calibration ensures accuracy, and the meter may adjust for wavelength-dependent sensitivity, as different detectors respond differently across the optical spectrum . Photodiode sensors are common for low-power measurements, with Silicon (Si) for visible to near-infrared, Germanium (Ge) for higher power near-infrared, and InGaAs for telecom wavelengths. Thermal sensors are used for high-power or divergent beams, often with an integrating sphere to capture all incident light .

Interface and Sensor Head Replacement

Modern OPMs often use modular sensor heads that can be replaced or connected via a dedicated interface. For example, Keysight's 8162-C series optical heads connect to the N7749C interface, supporting two or four heads simultaneously . These heads can be attached using magnetic D-shaped adapters, allowing rapid removal and replacement without twisting fibers, and they accommodate various fiber connectors, bare fibers, or open beams . The interface provides data readout over LAN or USB, supports SCPI commands, and allows continuous sampling with internal or external triggering. High-power versions can measure up to +26 dBm or +40 dBm, and analog outputs are available for automated alignment or integration with other instruments .

Practical Considerations

  • Calibration: Always ensure the replacement head is calibrated for the intended wavelength and power range.
  • Connector Compatibility: Use the appropriate adapter for fiber type or open beam to avoid measurement errors.
  • Signal Averaging: Adjust averaging times (100 µs to 10 s) depending on signal stability and measurement precision .
  • High-Power Measurements: Use thermal heads or integrating spheres for high-power or divergent beams to prevent detector saturation . By understanding the detector type, calibration, and interface options, users can replace or upgrade optical heads efficiently while maintaining accurate optical power measurements.
