Dimensions for fabricating the lintel of the electrical distribution box

The lintel should extend at least 150 mm beyond each side of the box opening, with length, height, and material chosen based on wall type and load requirements.

Determining Lintel Length

The overall lintel length is calculated by adding 150 mm bearing on each side of the structural opening to the clear span of the electrical box . For example, if the box opening is 600 mm wide, the lintel length should be: 600 mm (clear span) + 150 mm (left bearing) + 150 mm (right bearing) = 900 mm total length. For larger openings or heavier loads, lintels may need to be propped temporarily until masonry is fully cured, especially if the span exceeds 1500 mm .

Lintel Height and Width

  • Height: Typically ranges from 75 mm to 150 mm for light-duty applications like meter or electrical boxes, depending on wall thickness and load .
  • Width: Should match the wall thickness to ensure proper load transfer. For cavity walls, the lintel may include a “toe” extending to both inner and outer leaves .

Material Selection

  • Steel lintels are common for electrical box openings due to their strength and ease of fabrication. Galvanized steel with corrosion protection is recommended for durability .
  • Concrete or timber lintels can be used if the load is minimal, but steel is preferred for small openings in masonry walls .

Load Considerations

Even for small openings, account for:

  • Masonry weight above the lintel
  • Floor or roof loads if the wall supports additional structures
  • Live loads such as equipment or maintenance access For light-duty applications, the load ratio is typically 1:1 for masonry, but if the lintel also supports timber floors, the inner leaf may carry a higher proportion of the load .

Installation Notes

  • Ensure the lintel is fully bedded on mortar for proper load transfer .
  • Use a cavity tray for external walls to prevent moisture ingress .
  • For spans over 1500 mm, temporary props are required until masonry is fully loaded and cured . By following these guidelines, you can fabricate a lintel that safely supports the wall above an electrical distribution box while complying with standard construction practices.
