Energy consumption monitoring modules, such as the Eaton Power Xpert Branch Circuit Monitor (PXBCM), are designed to measure current, voltage, energy consumption, demand, and power factor for multiple load circuits within a distribution panel . These modules can be configured in strip or external CT arrangements, allowing flexible installation beside breakers or using external CTs for larger or remote circuits.

Wiring Components

  1. Meter Base (PXBCM-MB)
    • Acts as the central hub for connecting up to four Meter Modules.
    • Provides a built-in web server and Ethernet port for configuration and monitoring .
  2. Meter Modules
    • Strip Modules: Mounted beside breakers, available in 9, 15, or 21 CT configurations. Conductors pass through onboard CTs before connecting to breakers.
    • External Modules: Use external 333mV or 100mA CTs for circuits that cannot fit onboard CTs.
    • All modules must share a common mains voltage connection.

    • CTs must be installed so that all conductors pass through the CT core in the correct orientation to ensure accurate readings.

    • Modules can monitor three-phase wye, three-phase delta, center-tapped delta, or single-phase circuits.
    • Voltage connections are typically made at the main bus or breaker terminals.
  5. Communication and Display
    • Ethernet or web interface allows configuration of sequential, alternating, or custom breaker wiring.
    • Virtual meters can combine multiple phases into a single energy reading.
    • Local displays can be connected via dedicated display cables for on-site monitoring.
