How to determine how many connectors are in an optical cable

The number of connectors in an optical cable can be determined by inspecting the cable ends, identifying the connector type, and counting each termination point, considering whether the cable is simplex, duplex, or multi-fiber.

Inspect the Cable Ends

Each optical fiber cable terminates with one or more connectors. To determine the number of connectors, examine both ends of the cable. Simplex cables have one connector per end, while duplex cables have two connectors per end, often paired together in a single housing. High-density cables, such as MPO/MTP, can have multiple fibers terminated in a single connector, sometimes 12, 24, or more fibers per connector .

Identify Connector Type

Connector types influence how fibers are counted:

  • SC (Subscriber Connector): Square, push-pull design, typically used in simplex or duplex configurations .
  • LC (Lucent Connector): Smaller 1.25mm ferrule, common in high-density duplex setups .
  • ST (Straight Tip): Bayonet-style, usually simplex .
  • FC (Ferrule Connector): Screw-on, simplex, often in industrial or high-vibration environments .
  • MPO/MTP: Multi-fiber connectors, can terminate 12, 24, or more fibers in a single connector .

Count the Connectors

  1. Simplex cable: Count one connector at each end. Total connectors = 2.
  2. Duplex cable: Count two connectors at each end. Total connectors = 4.
  3. Multi-fiber cable (MPO/MTP): Count the number of fibers per connector and multiply by the number of connector ends. For example, a 12-fiber MPO cable with connectors at both ends has 2 connectors, but 12 fibers per connector, totaling 24 fiber terminations .

Consider Cable Configuration

  • Patch cables: Usually have connectors at both ends; count each termination.
  • Pigtails: One end is a connector, the other is bare fiber for splicing; count only the connectorized end.
  • Trunk cables: May have multiple fibers in a single multi-fiber connector; count each connector and note the fiber count per connector .

Practical Tips

  • Labeling on the cable or manufacturer specifications often indicate the number of fibers and connectors.
  • For high-density installations, refer to the connector type and fiber count per connector to avoid miscounting.
  • Always handle connectors carefully to prevent damage and signal loss. By combining visual inspection, knowledge of connector types, and understanding the cable configuration, you can accurately determine the number of connectors in any optical fiber cable .
