Connection Procedure

  1. Select the Correct Elbow Fitting Choose an elbow that matches the tray type (ladder, perforated, or solid-bottom) and the required bend angle (typically 45° or 90°). Ensure the material and finish are compatible with the main tray to prevent corrosion and maintain mechanical strength .
  2. Align and Position the Elbow Place the elbow at the intended bend location, ensuring it aligns with the straight tray sections. Avoid placing connectors at the center of spans; instead, position them between support points or near the quarter-point of the span for stability .
  3. Secure the Connection Use tray-specific connectors, bolts, or clips to join the elbow to the straight sections. For ladder trays, tray clips (CG*-1 type) can be installed inside or outside the tray depending on space and rung interference . Ensure all bolts are tightened evenly to prevent misalignment.
  4. Provide Adequate Support Install supports for elbows according to NEMA VE 2 guidelines. Supports should be placed close to the elbow to prevent sagging and maintain the minimum bend radius for cables . Trapeze or swing supports are commonly used for vertical or horizontal runs.
  5. Maintain Electrical Continuity Bond the elbow and connected tray sections using bonding jumpers. Ground the tray at intervals (typically every 15 m or 50 ft) and at both ends. For conduit drop-outs, use a grounding bushing and a bonding wire bolted to the tray .
  6. Check Minimum Bend Radius Ensure that the cable bend radius at the elbow does not exceed the manufacturer's recommended minimum to prevent cable damage . This is especially important for instrumentation and control cables.
  7. Final Inspection Verify alignment, support spacing, and bonding. Ensure that the elbow is level and securely fastened, and that cables can be installed without excessive bending or stress .

  • Use expansion connectors for long runs or at building expansion joints to accommodate thermal movement.
  • Avoid over-tightening bolts, which can deform the tray or elbow.
  • Handle materials carefully to prevent coating damage, especially for GI or aluminum trays.
