The polishing of fiber optic patch cords involves precise preparation, connector assembly, ferrule curing, polishing with controlled pressure and speed, and meticulous end-face inspection to ensure optimal optical performance.

Preparation and Cable Handling

Before polishing, all materials must be prepared, including fiber cables, connectors, epoxy, and polishing tools. Fiber cables are cut to the required lengths using automated cutting machines for accuracy and efficiency, then cleaned to remove dust and residues. The outer jacket and buffer coating are stripped using precision tools, exposing the bare fiber while avoiding damage to the 125µm cladding. Aramid yarn is applied for tensile strength, and the outer jacket is extruded to the desired diameter, typically 2.0mm or 3.0mm, depending on the application .

Connector Assembly and Epoxy Curing

The cleaned fiber is inserted into the connector ferrule, which is pre-filled with high-quality epoxy (commonly 353 epoxy). The assembly is then cured in a vertical or horizontal solidification furnace to secure the fiber within the ferrule. This step ensures mechanical stability and alignment of the fiber core with the ferrule axis .

Polishing Process

Polishing is performed using a fiber polishing machine with a polishing jig, pad, and film. Key parameters include:

  • Pressure: Adjusted via the four-corner pressure column to ensure uniform contact with the polishing film.
  • Time: Set according to the connector type and desired surface finish.
  • Speed: Controlled to achieve consistent polishing without damaging the fiber or film. The ferrule end-face is polished in multiple stages, often starting with coarse film and progressing to finer films to achieve a smooth, low-loss surface. During polishing, the connector is periodically cleaned and inspected to prevent contamination or scratches .

End-Face Inspection

After polishing, the connector end-face is cleaned with an air gun or ultrasonic cleaner to remove residual water or debris. The surface is inspected under a 400x or 600x microscope to check for scratches, chips, or contamination. Only connectors with flawless end-faces proceed to testing .

Testing and Quality Assurance

Polished patch cords undergo rigorous testing for insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) to ensure signal integrity. Interferometers or optical test equipment may be used to verify end-face geometry and optical performance. This step guarantees that the patch cord meets international standards and customer requirements .
