What It Is

Bend-insensitive fiber (BIF) is a type of optical fiber designed to retain light within the core even when the cable is bent beyond the typical minimum bend radius. Traditional fibers lose light when bent sharply because the outer modes of light escape into the cladding, causing attenuation. BIF solves this problem by incorporating a special trench or ring of lower refractive index material around the core, which reflects escaping light back into the core, maintaining signal integrity ( ).

How It Works

The key innovation in BIF is the depressed-cladding or trench design:

  • Core: Highest refractive index, carries the main light signal.
  • Inner cladding: Standard cladding layer.
  • Low-index trench: Surrounds the core to reflect weakly guided light back into the core.
  • Outer cladding: Provides structural support. This structure ensures that >99% of light remains in the core even under tight bends, significantly reducing bend loss compared to standard fibers ( ).
