Installation sequence of the main switch in the distribution box

The main switch (double-pole MCB) should be installed first, followed by the RCCB, and then the sub-circuit MCBs, with proper connections to neutral and earth links.

Step-by-Step Installation Sequence

1. Mount the Distribution Box: Position the distribution box securely on the wall, ensuring it is level and accessible. Ensure the enclosure allows entry for the main feeder cable and sub-circuit cables from top or bottom as required . 2. Install the Main Switch (Main MCB):

  • Use a double-pole MCB as the main switch, typically rated 63A for domestic installations .
  • Connect the incoming phase and neutral wires from the main supply to the input terminals of the main MCB.
  • Ensure the MCB is securely mounted on the DIN rail and properly labeled. 3. Connect the RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker):
  • Install the RCCB immediately after the main MCB.
  • Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB.
  • The RCCB provides protection against leakage currents, electrical shocks, and insulation faults. For domestic installations, a 30mA rated RCCB is commonly used . 4. Install Sub-Circuit MCBs:
  • Connect the output of the RCCB to the input terminals of the single-pole or double-pole MCBs for individual sub-circuits.
  • Single-pole MCBs are typically used for lighting and socket circuits, while double-pole MCBs may be used for special loads like air conditioners . 5. Connect Neutral and Earth Links:
  • Use a neutral busbar to distribute the neutral wire to all sub-circuits.
  • Connect all earth wires from the supply and sub-circuits to the earth busbar to ensure proper grounding . 6. Verify Connections and Safety:
  • Ensure all connections are tight and torque-compliant.
  • Label each circuit clearly.
  • Test the installation with a multimeter to confirm correct voltage and continuity before switching on the main supply . 7. Power On Sequence:
  • Switch on the main MCB first, then the RCCB, and finally the sub-circuit MCBs. This ensures proper distribution and protection of all circuits . Following this sequence ensures safe and efficient operation of the distribution box, protecting both the electrical system and users from faults or overloads.
