Photovoltaic (PV) Module Testing & Certification | TÜV SÜD
Our service portfolio focuses not only on traditional crystalline and thin-film PV modules but also on building integrated PV modules
PV modules are evaluated for their electrical output and efficiency under controlled conditions. Key tests include measuring voltage, current, maximum power (Pmax), fill factor, and the I-V curve using a solar simulator (flash test) to verify rated power and efficiency against manufacturer specifications. These tests detect electrical irregularities and ensure consistent energy output over the module's lifespan .
Modules undergo thermal cycling between extreme temperatures (e.g., -40°C to +85°C) to simulate daily and seasonal variations, testing solder joint integrity and material fatigue. Damp heat testing exposes modules to high humidity and temperature (typically 85°C and 85% RH for 1000 hours) to assess resistance to moisture, corrosion, and material degradation. UV exposure, mechanical load, and vibration tests evaluate anti-cracking, anti-delamination, and structural durability .
Degradation testing identifies long-term performance losses due to heat, humidity, voltage stress, and environmental exposure. It can reveal issues such as Potential Induced Degradation (PID), Light-Induced Degradation (LID), and material aging, which may affect power stability over time .
Visual inspections detect physical defects like micro-cracks, delamination, bubbles, misaligned cells, or frame damage. Advanced imaging techniques include electroluminescence (EL), photoluminescence (PL), and ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF), which can identify cracks, encapsulant degradation, and other defects without electrical connections .
Insulation resistance tests use a megohmmeter to ensure sufficient electrical isolation between internal components and the frame, preventing electrical hazards. Modules are also tested for compliance with IEC 61730, UL 61730, and CAN/CSA 61730 standards to ensure safe electrical and mechanical operation .
Mechanical tests include bending, peel, and impact tests to evaluate adhesive strength, stability, and service life. These tests simulate real-world stresses such as wind, snow loads, and handling during installation .
In addition to laboratory tests, in-field inspections are conducted to monitor module health over time. Techniques include IV curve tracing, open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Isc) measurements, and PL/UVF imaging. These methods help detect moisture ingress, series resistance increases, and other performance issues in operational PV plants .
PV modules are certified according to international standards such as IEC 61215, IEC 61730, and IEC TS 62915, which cover performance, safety, and environmental resilience. Certification ensures modules meet stringent quality requirements, providing confidence to investors, manufacturers, and end-users .
PV module testing is a multi-faceted process combining electrical, mechanical, environmental, and visual assessments. Laboratory simulations, field inspections, and adherence to international standards collectively ensure that PV modules deliver reliable, safe, and efficient performance throughout their operational life. These methods are essential for manufacturers, investors, and operators to guarantee long-term energy yield and system reliability.
