Key Settings in Protection Relays

  • TSM (Time Setting Multiplier): Scales the base operating time from the relay's characteristic curve, allowing coordination between upstream and downstream relays. Lower TSM values lead to faster trips .
  • OL (Overload Setting): Protects against thermal overload by monitoring current and tripping if it exceeds safe limits .
  • EL (Earth Leakage / Earth Fault Setting): Detects ground faults and triggers protective action .
  • MF (Multiplying Factor / Metering Factor): Adjusts relay calculations for accurate current measurement and coordination .
