Om3 single-mode optical cable

OM3 is a multimode fiber type and is not a single-mode optical cable; it is optimized for short-distance, high-speed data transmission within buildings and data centers.

Understanding OM3 Fiber

OM3 stands for Optical Multimode 3, a multimode fiber with a 50 µm core diameter designed for high-speed data transmission using laser-optimized technology (typically VCSELs) at 850 nm wavelength . It supports 10Gbps up to 300 meters, 40Gbps up to 100 meters, and 100Gbps for short intra-building links . OM3 is commonly used in data centers, LANs, and equipment rooms where distances are relatively short and cost-effective multimode transceivers are preferred .

Single-Mode vs Multimode

Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2) has a much smaller core, around 9 µm, allowing light to travel in a single path. This eliminates modal dispersion and enables long-distance transmission, often tens of kilometers, making it suitable for campus backbones, telecom, and FTTH applications . In contrast, OM3's larger core allows multiple light paths, which limits its effective distance due to modal dispersion but reduces transceiver costs .

Key Points About OM3

  • Core Diameter: 50 µm
  • Jacket Color: Aqua (standard for OM3)
  • Maximum Distance: 300 m at 10Gbps, shorter for higher speeds
  • Applications: Short-range data center links, intra-building LANs, and backbone connections under 300 meters
  • Compatibility: Works with multimode transceivers; not suitable for single-mode transceivers without mode-conditioning patch cables

Practical Implications

If your project requires long-distance or telecom-grade transmission, you should use single-mode fiber (OS2) instead of OM3 . OM3 is cost-effective for short-range, high-speed connections but cannot replace single-mode fiber for long-haul links. Attempting to use OM3 as single-mode will result in signal loss and incompatibility with single-mode transceivers. In summary, OM3 is strictly a multimode fiber optimized for short-distance, high-speed applications, and it is not a single-mode optical cable. For long-distance or single-mode systems, OS1 or OS2 fiber should be specified.
