Optical cable splicing involves a systematic sequence of preparation, stripping, cleaning, alignment, fusion, protection, and testing to ensure low-loss, reliable fiber connections.

1. Preparation

Before splicing, gather all necessary tools and materials, including a fusion splicer, fiber optic cables, protective sleeves or heat-shrink tubes, alcohol wipes, cleaver or precision cutting tools, and a splice tray for organization . Inspect each fiber optic cable for damage or defects, replacing any compromised sections. Measure and cut cables to equal lengths to maintain consistency during splicing. Proper preparation ensures efficient workflow and minimizes the risk of splice failure.

2. Stripping and Cleaning

Each fiber must be stripped of its protective coating using a precision stripping tool or blade, taking care not to damage the underlying glass fiber . 4. Mechanical Splicing (Optional)

Mechanical splicing uses precision alignment devices and index-matching gel to hold fiber ends in contact . While insertion loss is slightly higher (around 0.3 dB), mechanical splicing is useful for temporary repairs or field installations where fusion splicing is impractical.

5. Protection

After splicing, fibers are protected using heat-shrink sleeves or protective tubes to provide mechanical strength and environmental resistance . Splices are then organized in a splice tray, which prevents bending beyond the fiber's minimum bend radius. The tray is housed in a splice closure, shielding the fibers from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

6. Testing

Finally, the quality of the splice is verified using an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), which measures splice loss, identifies the exact location of the splice, and ensures signal integrity across the fiber run . Proper testing confirms that the splice meets performance standards and is suitable for long-term deployment.
