Fiber distribution box connection

A fiber optic distribution box is connected to the backbone optical cable and distributes signals to branch cables or end-user devices.

How the Distribution Box Connects

A fiber optic distribution box (FDB) serves as a central hub in a fiber optic network, where the main backbone cable enters the box through an inlet port. The exposed fibers from the backbone cable are then terminated or spliced onto splice trays or patch panels inside the box, providing a secure and organized connection point for further distribution . From the distribution box, the optical signals are routed to branch cables or drop cables, which carry the signal to network devices such as optical network units (ONUs), routers, switches, or customer premises equipment (CPE) . In networks using splitters, the FDB can also divide a single input signal into multiple outputs, enabling one backbone fiber to serve multiple end users .

Typical Installation Locations

  • Indoor installations: Wall-mounted in telecom closets, equipment rooms, or building corridors for FTTH or FTTB networks .
  • Outdoor installations: Pole-mounted or embedded in street cabinets to serve neighborhoods or high-density areas .

Components Supporting Connections

  • Splice trays: Organize and protect fiber splices.
  • Patch panels: Provide a convenient interface for connecting fibers to network devices.
  • Splitters: Enable proportional distribution of signals to multiple outputs.
  • Adapters and connectors: SC, LC, or ST connectors ensure low-loss, reliable connections . In summary, the fiber optic distribution box is connected to the main backbone cable and acts as a junction point, distributing optical signals to branch lines or end-user devices while protecting and organizing the fibers for efficient network management .
