Why Direct Splicing is Problematic

A fiber-to-fiber media converter converts optical signals between SMF and MMF. It receives the optical signal on one fiber type, converts it to an electrical signal, and retransmits it as an optical signal on the other fiber type. Media converters are ideal for long-distance point-to-point links, connecting building LANs to WANs, or extending multi-mode networks over single-mode fiber for distances up to 100–180 km .

For high-capacity networks, Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (OADM) or DWDM systems can internally convert single-mode inputs to multi-mode outputs. These are typically used in telecom or data center environments where multiple wavelengths and fiber modes need to be managed simultaneously .
