How to test if a pigtail fiber has light

You can test for light on a pigtail fiber using a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) or a light source and power meter to confirm continuity and detect faults.

Using a Visual Fault Locator (VFL)

A VFL emits a bright red light (around 650 nm) that travels through the fiber, making it easy to see if light is present at the far end or if there are breaks, bends, or poor splices along the fiber . To use a VFL:

  1. Ensure the VFL is charged or has fresh batteries.
  2. Clean the fiber ends and connectors to avoid contamination.
  3. Connect the VFL to the pigtail fiber.
  4. Observe the other end of the fiber or look for light leaking from faults. If light is visible, the fiber is transmitting; if not, there may be a break or high-loss point . VFLs are especially useful for short fibers, splice-on pigtails, or troubleshooting near the end of a link .

Using a Light Source and Power Meter

For a more precise measurement of light transmission:

  1. Disconnect any active equipment from the fiber.
  2. Connect a suitable light source to one end of the pigtail fiber (1310/1550 nm for single-mode, 850/1300 nm for multimode).
  3. Attach a power meter to the other end.
  4. Measure the output power. If the reading is within expected levels, the fiber is transmitting light correctly . This method also allows you to measure insertion loss and verify the fiber meets specifications.

Visual Inspection

Before testing, inspect the fiber endface using a fiber optic microscope to ensure it is clean, polished, and free of scratches or contamination. A poor-quality endface can prevent light from transmitting even if the fiber itself is intact .

Safety Precautions

  • Never look directly into the fiber end when a light source is active, as laser light can damage your eyes.
  • Always clean connectors and pigtails before testing to avoid false readings. By combining VFL testing, power meter measurements, and visual inspection, you can reliably determine if a pigtail fiber is transmitting light and identify any faults or issues along the fiber.
