Multimode fiber optic cable has light but no transmission

If a multimode fiber optic cable has visible light but no data transmission, the issue is often due to SFP module incompatibility, incorrect fiber type, or misaligned Tx/Rx connections.

Common Causes

1. SFP Module and Fiber Type Mismatch Multimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core (50–62.5 µm) compared to single-mode fiber (9 µm), and SFP modules are designed for specific fiber types. Using an older multimode SFP with OM4 fiber, for example, may prevent the link from coming up even if light is visible, because the module cannot properly interpret the signal . 2. Tx/Rx Misalignment Fiber transceivers have separate transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) ports. If the Tx of one end is not connected to the Rx of the other, light may be visible but no data will pass. Ensure that the fiber is correctly connected and that the SFP modules are oriented properly . 3. Modal Dispersion and Distance Limitations Multimode fiber supports multiple light modes, which can cause pulse broadening over distance (modal dispersion). If the cable length exceeds the maximum supported distance for the fiber type and data rate (e.g., OM3/OM4 at 10 Gbps supports up to ~300–400 meters), the signal may degrade enough to prevent transmission . 4. Connector or Cable Issues Dirty or damaged connectors, improper polishing, or microbends in the fiber can allow light to pass but prevent reliable data transmission. Inspect and clean connectors and ensure proper installation .
