Armored Outdoor Optical Cable Structure

Armored outdoor optical cables feature a multi-layered protective design that ensures mechanical strength, environmental resistance, and reliable optical performance.

Core Structure

Armored optical cables are designed to protect delicate optical fibers while maintaining high transmission performance in harsh outdoor environments. The typical structure includes several layers from the inside out:

  • Optical Fiber Core: The central component, usually single-mode or multi-mode fibers, responsible for transmitting data. Each fiber is coated with a buffer layer (commonly 900µm) for additional mechanical protection and flame resistance .

  • Inner Sheath / Protective Layer: Surrounds the fiber core and may include aramid yarns (Kevlar) to enhance tensile strength and prevent fiber stretching during installation .

  • Metal Armor Layer: A stainless steel or aluminum tube or tape wrapped around the inner sheath. This layer provides bite-proof, crush-resistant, and tension-resistant protection, making the cable suitable for direct burial, outdoor ducts, or industrial environments . Armor types include:

    • Interlock Armor: Interlocking metal strips offering superior tensile strength and crush resistance.
    • Square-Lock Armor: Square-profiled metal strips providing flexibility and bending resistance .
  • Outer Jacket: Typically made of polyethylene (PE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the outer jacket protects against abrasion, UV radiation, moisture, and chemical exposure .

Advantages of Armored Outdoor Cables

  • Mechanical Protection: Resistant to rodent bites, crushing, and external impacts.
  • Environmental Resistance: Withstands moisture, UV exposure, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Installation Flexibility: Can be laid directly in the ground or pulled through ducts without additional conduit.
  • Long Service Life: The combination of metal armor and protective layers ensures stable performance over time .

Applications

Armored outdoor optical cables are widely used in:

  • Telecommunications networks: Long-distance outdoor fiber routes.
  • Industrial and harsh environments: Factories, power plants, and outdoor installations.
  • Direct burial and outside plant (OSP) deployments: Where mechanical and environmental protection is critical . In summary, the multi-layered structure of armored outdoor optical cables—comprising the fiber core, inner protective layers, metal armor, and outer jacket—ensures both optical performance and robust protection against mechanical and environmental hazards, making them ideal for demanding outdoor applications.
