Install 1G active optical module

Installing a 1G active optical module requires careful handling, proper ESD protection, and correct insertion into a compatible SFP port to ensure reliable network connectivity.

Preparation and Safety

  1. Check Compatibility: Verify that your network device supports 1G SFP modules and that the module type matches the port specifications (e.g., fiber type, single-mode or multi-mode) .
  2. ESD Protection: Wear a grounded wrist strap or ensure proper grounding to prevent electrostatic discharge, which can damage the module .
  3. Keep Dust Caps On: Leave the dust caps on the SFP module and fiber connectors until ready to connect to prevent contamination and signal degradation .
  4. Power Considerations: While most SFP modules are hot-swappable, it is recommended to check the device documentation for hot-insertion support and avoid removing modules with active cables connected .

Installation Steps

  1. Orient the Module: Confirm the correct orientation of the SFP module so that the electrical contacts align with the port .
  2. Insert the Module: Gently slide the module into the SFP port until it clicks or the latch locks into place. Do not force it, as excessive pressure can damage the port cage or internal connectors .
  3. Connect Fiber or Copper Cables: Once the module is securely seated, remove the dust caps and connect the appropriate fiber optic or copper cable. Ensure proper polarity for fiber connections .
  4. Verify Link Status: Check the device LEDs or management interface to confirm that the link is active. If the link does not come up, verify module compatibility, cable type, and fiber polarity .

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Error-Disabled Ports: If the interface becomes error-disabled after module insertion, use the device CLI to shut down and then no shut the interface to re-enable it .
  • Module Not Detected: Ensure the module is fully seated, the port supports the module type, and the device firmware recognizes third-party SFPs if applicable .
  • Signal Issues: Check for contamination on fiber connectors, correct fiber type, and distance limitations for the module .

Removal (Optional)

  1. Disconnect the fiber or copper cables.
  2. Release the latch mechanism (pull tab, bail latch, or slide latch) and gently remove the module.
  3. Replace dust caps to protect the module and port . Following these steps ensures safe installation, maintains port integrity, and provides reliable 1G network connectivity using active optical modules.
