Color of fiber optic cable cut-off line

Fiber optic cut-off lines are identified using a standardized color code, typically following the TIA-598-C/D 12-color sequence for individual fibers and buffer tubes.

Standard Fiber Color Coding

Fiber optic cables use color coding to identify individual fibers within a cable, which is essential for splicing, termination, and maintenance. According to the TIA-598-C standard, the first 12 fibers in a cable are color-coded as follows: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua . For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with stripes or other markers to distinguish additional fibers .

Cut-Off Line Identification

The cut-off line in a fiber optic cable is usually marked by the color of the individual fiber or the buffer tube it belongs to. For example, in a high-count cable, each fiber is assigned a color within its tube, and the tube itself may have a color to indicate its group. This allows technicians to quickly identify the fiber to be cut or spliced without confusion . In some European or high-density cables, a 16-color sequence may be used for MPO connectors, including colors like Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime for fibers 13–16 .

Practical Application

  • Single-fiber cables: The outer jacket color often indicates the fiber type (e.g., OS2, OM3, OM4), and the cut-off line corresponds to the fiber inside.
  • Multi-fiber cables: Each fiber is color-coded according to the 12-color sequence, and the cut-off line is identified by the fiber's color within its buffer tube.
  • High-density cables: Additional markings such as stripes or printed legends are used to maintain unique identification for each fiber . Using this standardized color system ensures accurate splicing, reduces errors, and improves safety during fiber optic installation and maintenance .
