In the case of current measurement, the sensor detects the magnetic field generated by an external electrical current using the Faraday effect, which rotates the polarization of light passing through the fiber . The fiber itself is an excellent electrical insulator, and no electrical current flows inside the optical fiber .

This non-contact, non-conductive operation is a key advantage over traditional electrical sensors.
