Bfoc and st interfaces

BFOC (Bayonet Fiber Optic Connector) and ST (Straight Tip) refer to the same type of fiber optic connector, widely used for quick, secure connections in multimode and single-mode networks.

Overview

The ST connector, also known as BFOC, was developed by AT&T in the mid-1980s as a cost-effective alternative to the larger Biconic Connector . It features a bayonet-style coupling that allows a quick half-turn lock, making it faster to connect and disconnect compared to threaded connectors. Initially designed for multimode fibers, it was later adapted for single-mode fibers as well.

Design and Features

  • Ferrule: Uses a 2.5mm ceramic ferrule to align the fiber precisely .
  • Spring-loaded mechanism: Ensures firm contact between fibers, reducing signal loss.
  • Bayonet mount: Provides a secure, half-turn locking system for easy mating and demating.
  • Compatibility: The ferrule size is similar to SC and FC connectors, allowing hybrid adapter use .

Applications

ST/BFOC connectors are commonly used in:

  • Campus networks and corporate environments
  • Industrial Ethernet switches, such as Siemens SCALANCE XC206-2, which feature ST/BFOC ports for fiber connections
  • Military and long-distance multimode fiber applications They are suitable for both short and long-distance connections, though in tight spaces like dense patch panels, the bayonet mechanism can be less convenient .

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages:

  • Quick and reliable connection
  • Cost-effective for multimode fiber
  • Durable and widely standardized Limitations:
  • Larger than modern LC connectors, which can limit port density
  • Bayonet mechanism may be cumbersome in cramped installations

Summary

In essence, BFOC and ST are interchangeable terms for a fiber optic connector that combines a 2.5mm ferrule, spring-loaded contact, and bayonet locking. While gradually being replaced by smaller connectors in high-density setups, ST/BFOC remains a trusted choice for multimode fiber networks and industrial applications .
