Vibration damper for optical cables

Vibration dampers protect optical cables from wind-induced fatigue, extending cable life and preventing signal loss.

Purpose of Vibration Dampers

Vibration dampers are used to absorb aeolian or wind-induced vibrations in overhead optical cables, such as ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) and OPGW (Optical Ground Wire). These vibrations can cause conductor fatigue near hardware attachments, potentially leading to cable damage or reduced service life. Dampers dissipate the energy of oscillations, preventing stress accumulation and maintaining the integrity of the optical fibers inside the cable .

Types of Vibration Dampers

1. Spiral Vibration Dampers

  • Designed with a helically-formed damping section that interacts with the cable to counteract natural vibration waves.
  • Feature a gripping section that gently holds the cable without damaging fibers or causing signal loss.
  • Recommended for ADSS cables when span length and tension indicate a need for vibration protection.
  • Made from weather-resistant, non-corrosive plastic, ensuring long-term durability . 2. Stockbridge-Type Dampers
  • Consist of a messenger cable with masses at each end and a clamp attached to the conductor.
  • Designed to reduce aeolian vibration by exciting multiple resonance modes, flattening resonance peaks, and dissipating energy across a wide frequency range.
  • Can be asymmetrical with multiple resonance frequencies for improved performance on ADSS and OPGW cables.
  • Typically made from aluminum alloy, stainless steel, and galvanized steel, with clamps designed to minimize stress concentration on the cable . 3. Tuned or Friction-Resonance Dampers
  • Operate efficiently near their natural frequencies to cancel damaging fatigue.
  • Designed to provide uniform damping over a broad frequency band (typically 5–100 Hz), covering the range of dangerous conductor vibrations.
  • Include break-away bolts or friction clamps for easy installation and proper torque adjustment .

Installation Considerations

  • Dampers are usually installed on the cable near suspension clamps, dead-end tension sets, or armour rods.
  • Proper positioning and sizing are critical to ensure effective energy dissipation.
  • Spiral dampers are often used directly on the cable, while Stockbridge-type dampers may require armour rods for direct cable attachment .

Benefits

  • Reduces fatigue and mechanical stress on optical cables.
  • Prevents optical signal loss by avoiding fiber distortion.
  • Extends service life of ADSS and OPGW cables.
  • Adaptable to different cable sizes and span lengths, ensuring reliable performance under varying environmental conditions . In summary, selecting the appropriate vibration damper—spiral, Stockbridge, or tuned resonance type—depends on the cable type, span length, tension, and environmental conditions. Proper installation ensures long-term reliability and protection of optical fiber networks.
