From the backbone, distribution cables branch out to neighborhoods and business zones. These cables are either strung on telephone poles or run through underground conduits and contain multiple fiber strands bundled together with protective sheathing .
From the distribution network, drop lines are used to connect individual buildings. These can be overhead or buried and are routed to a terminal or Optical Network Terminal (ONT) at the building. For homes, a single fiber strand is pulled from the distribution cable to form the drop line, which is flexible and hair-thin, allowing it to be easily routed through existing conduits or newly installed small trenches if necessary . Extra fiber is often left coiled in buildings that have not yet subscribed to service, enabling future connections without additional digging .
Once the fiber reaches the building, it is connected to an ONT, which converts the light signals into electrical signals for use by routers and other devices inside the home or business . The ONT is typically installed inside or just outside the building, and the fiber is secured with a protective cover or termination box. From there, an Ethernet cable connects the ONT to a router or gateway, distributing high-speed internet throughout the premises .
Fiber routing can involve aerial lines on poles or underground conduits, depending on the area and infrastructure. Newer techniques like micro-trenching allow fiber to be laid in narrow, shallow trenches, reducing installation time and cost . Technicians plan the route carefully, considering building entry points, existing conduits, and minimizing signal loss during installation .
In essence, fiber optic routing involves a hierarchical system: backbone networks → distribution cables → drop lines → ONT → router. This structured approach ensures high-speed, low-latency, and reliable internet delivery while allowing for future expansion and easy maintenance .
